Why test your outlet first?
Optional: the test button
US 3-prong (NEMA 5-15) · GFCI test (5mA)
Save your work and unplug computers on that circuit first. Press the black GFCI TEST button. On a working GFCI-protected outlet, the power cuts and the lights go out. Press RESET on the GFCI outlet, or flip the breaker back on, to bring the power back.
UK 3-pin (Type G) · RCD test (30mA)
Save your work and unplug computers on that circuit first. Press the black RCD TEST button. On a working RCD-protected circuit, the power cuts and the lights go out, and that can include other rooms. Reset the RCD at your consumer unit to bring the power back.
EU Schuko (Type F) · RCD test (30mA)
Save your work and unplug computers on that circuit first. Press the black RCD TEST button. On a working RCD-protected circuit, the power cuts and the lights go out, and that can include other rooms. Reset the RCD at your consumer unit to bring the power back.
AU 3-pin (Type I) · RCD test (30mA)
Save your work and unplug computers on that circuit first. Press the black RCD TEST button. On a working RCD-protected circuit, the power cuts and the lights go out, and that can include other rooms. Reset the RCD at your switchboard to bring the power back.
If a GFCI- or RCD-protected outlet doesn't trip, contact a licensed electrician. The plug-in test needs a connected ground, so on an outlet without one, use the TEST button on the GFCI outlet itself.
What the three lights mean
| Lights | Reading | What it means | Grounding product? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Correct | Outlet is wired correctly | OK | |
| Open ground | Ground wire is missing or disconnected | Don't use | |
| Open neutral | Neutral wire is not connected | Don't use | |
| Hot/neutral reversed | Hot and neutral wires are swapped | Don't use | |
| Hot/ground reversed | Hot and ground wires are swapped | Don't use | |
| Open hot | No power, or the hot wire isn't connected | Don't use | |
| Hot/ground reversed, missing ground | Hot and ground are swapped, and the ground is missing | Don't use |
Light 1 is red, lights 2 and 3 are green. If the chart on your tester looks upside down, the outlet is installed ground pin up. Turn your view so the chart reads upright, then read left to right.
